What Happens After You Appoint a GPSR Representative?

For many online business owners, appointing a GPSR representative is the big “compliance” tick-box. But what actually changes after you’ve got your official rep in place?

The short answer: You get peace of mind, you can continue selling into the EU, NI and EEA but you also take on a few new responsibilities.

Here’s what actually happens, and what you need to do to keep things running smoothly.

1. Your Contact Details Are Registered

Once you appoint your GPSR rep (sometimes called an EU Appointed Person), they become your official contact with EU authorities. If there’s ever a question about your digital product’s safety, regulators will reach out through them, not directly to you.

2. Your Documentation Must Stay Up to Date

You’ll need to provide your rep with up-to-date safety and compliance documents about your digital products. This isn’t a “set and forget” process. If you update your product, release a new version, or change how it works, you’ll need to let your rep know.

3. Ongoing Communication

If the authorities have a question or there’s ever a safety concern (however rare), your GPSR rep will handle the initial communication and let you know what’s needed. It means you won’t be left fielding official emails or worrying about missing a deadline.

4. Annual (or Ad Hoc) Reviews

A good GPSR rep will check in at least once a year to review your products, documentation, and any changes to your business. It’s in your interest to respond promptly – you’re still responsible for the quality and safety of what you sell- your representative does not assume responsibility.

5. Staying Legally Covered

If you move, change your business name, or update your offerings, you must inform your rep. It keeps your compliance airtight, and means you’re protected if rules shift or your business grows.

Why it Matters

Appointing a GPSR rep is about future-proofing your business, not just ticking a box.

It gives you:

  • A point of contact for EU authorities
  • Help with any compliance queries
  • Less admin and fewer headaches if rules change

Thinking of selling digital or physical products in the EU and need someone you can trust with the compliance side?
